Reflection
PebblePad facilitates the process of reflection in a variety of ways:
- The inbuilt asset wizards prompt users to reflect on diverse aspects of their experience, identifying evidence of learning that might otherwise be overlooked.
- Within each wizard there is a specific reflection step that encourages users to not just describe an experience but also consider how and why this experience was significant and what further learning might be required.
- For those who find reflection difficult, the thought asset provides graded scaffolding of the reflection process as an option.
Collaboration/Group Work
PebblePad supports collaboration between individuals or within a group in a number of ways.
At a basic level all assets can be shared with comment permissions. The person receiving the asset can view it and add comments and the asset owner can respond to these comments. A dialogue about the asset can therefore occur. Assets can be shared in this way with external people who do not have PebblePad accounts.
Any asset can also be shared with one or more other PebblePad users with ‘collaborate’ permissions. All users can then edit and contribute to the asset. It is even possible to create a collaborative webfolio in which each user has a page that only they can edit, while other pages can be edited by all members of the group.
Gateways provide another space for collaboration and group work. Permissions can be set so that all users on a gateway can see each other’s work, comment on each other’s work, contribute to a gateway blog, and receive feedback from the group’s mentor/supervisor. In combination with collaborative assets, this can be an effective mechanism for facilitating project work.
Feedback
PebblePad supports both informal comment and formal feedback processes.
Users can share assets with one or more other people and give them permission to add comments to the asset. These comments can be deleted at any time by the asset owner.
Within gateways user groups can be given comment permissions. Comments added to an asset in a gateway can also be deleted by the asset owner.
Within gateways user groups can also be given feedback permissions. Feedback is part of a more formal assessment process and therefore cannot be removed by the asset owner.
Gateways provide a live link to the published assets. This means that assets can sit on a gateway and be viewed by a tutor while work is progressing. At submission deadline the gateway can be locked, preventing any further editing of the assets. These functions enable gateways to be very effectively used for both formative and summative feedback.
Assessment
Formal assessment in PebblePad is managed via Gateways. All the following assessment processes are supported within gateways:
Only assets that students choose to publish to a gateway are available for assessment and the assessment process in no way compromises the privacy of a student’s personal PebblePad account.
